ENC men’s tennis won their first Commonwealth Coast Conference match of the 2013 season 9-0 against Curry College on March 23.

The visiting Lions handily defeated the Colonels to improve to 4-4 (1-0) on the season. The Colonels dropped to 0-5 (0-1).

The Lions earned three early points with wins at every doubles position.

No. 1 doubles partners Austin Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) won 8-4. The No. 2 doubles pair of Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Tim Luz (Cumberland, R.I.) defeated their opponents 8-3. In the final doubles competition, Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) won 8-1.

Senior Steelman won his No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 and No. 4 singles, McKay-Corkum and Perron, respectively, each picked up 6-0, 6-0 victories.

Junior Luz defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, while Paterno earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5. Thompson won the Lions’ final match 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to give the Lions a 9-0 match victory.

“The team stayed focused today. We had a job to do and we got it done. We just need to keep that focus moving into matches against tougher teams,” said Steelman.

The Lions continue CCC play at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, against Endicott College on the Waterston Avenue courts.
