Animal abuse in Mérida is punishable by the Penal Code of the State of Yucatán and the sanctions vary depending on the severity of the damage.:
If the abuse does not endanger the life of the animal, the penalty ranges from 3 months to 1 year in prison and a fine of 50 to 100 days..

In case of death of the animal, the punishment is 6 months to 2 years in prison and a fine of 200 to 400 days..
