Former Justice Minister Álvaro Laborinho Lúcio died in the early hours of Thursday, October 23, according to CNN Portugal.
Born in Nazaré on December 1, 1941, he was a retired judge at the Supreme Court of Justice.
With a degree in Law and a Complementary Course in Legal Sciences, he held several important roles in the area of Justice. He was a public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal of Coimbra, an inspector at the Public Ministry, Deputy Attorney General of the Republic and director of the Judicial Police School and the Center for Judicial Studies. He was appointed Minister of Justice in 1990, during the government of Cavaco Silva, and was Minister of the Republic for the Azores in 2003, during the Presidency of Jorge Sampaio.
Member of the International Academy of Portuguese Culture and honorary doctorate from the University of Minho, Laborinho Lúcio was awarded the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ in 2005 by Jorge Sampaio. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of S. Raimundo de Peñaforte by the King of Spain.
In 2023, the Assembly of the Republic awarded him the Gold Medal Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
