HAVANA.- Cuba registered this Saturday a new national blackout after the total disconnection of the National Electric Systemreported the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
This is the second collapse in less than a week, in the midst of an energy crisis affecting the island.
According to Cuban authorities, protocols are already implemented to gradually restore service, prioritizing essential facilities such as hospitals and water systems.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that “there has been a total disconnection of the National Electrical System,” which left a large part of the country without electricity.
The Electrical Union He explained that the failure originated in Unit number 6 of the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant, which generated a “cascade effect” in other plants connected to the system.
This type of failure shows the fragility of the electrical network, which depends largely on thermoelectric plants and the constant supply of fuel.
Furthermore, a deficit of 1,740 megawatts in peak hours, which anticipated difficulties in electricity generation.
The restoration of the service is carried out progressively, with priority in the so-called “vital centers”, such as hospitals and aqueducts.
Blackouts in Cuba have intensified in recent years, but in 2026 they have been worsened by the lack of fuel to operate power plants.
This situation is linked, according to the government, to the blockade of oil supplies, which limits energy generation on the island.
The shortage has also impacted public services and food transportation, affecting the daily lives of the population.
In recent days, several protests have been registered in Havana and other cities due to constant power outages and lack of basic services.
In this regard, the president Miguel Diaz-Canel He recognized the social unrest, although he affirmed that his government is looking for solutions to the crisis.
