They are part of the same generation, both born in 1974 and born in the 70s and 80s in Madrid, where they lost their vocation to interpretation. Graduates of the Cristina Rota Interpretation School, Malena Alterio and Carmen Ruiz appeared in 2000 as actresses of two popular TV series: There is no one alive here y I’m Bea.
Your interpretive ambitions were raised in all possible registers from the beginning. no embargo, you can choose, they say clearly: “Always theater”. This is the idea of meeting her again to celebrate the ephemeris of tablas, which is celebrated on Monday, March 27, and at Teatros del Canal our next joint project: An extraordinary life.
Written and directed by Mariano Tenconi Blanco, in which they both play two women with lively lives. Let’s suffer, regret, love, learn to complain… Have monologues, dialogues, intimate diaries…
Please. En An extraordinary life both play two friends, Aurora and Blanca. What do you have in common with your characters?
Little Alteria. Explore the emotional bonds this friend creates over time. How they support her, both the characters and us. We can spend more time but…
Carmen Ruiz. We’re still in love.
BUT Yes. Borges said it too. That a relationship of equals, emotional love, must be cultivated day by day, but friendship was not necessary.

CR They have many things, they are divine characters. They give you the opportunity to be the best actress. But no… They don’t see me much, once in a while they have everything.
BUT They go through something common to all: if they fall in love, if they fall in love, if they stab their fathers… Of course you can live everything if you are happy, that’s what life is about.
P. The peculiarity of this work – with which it will be at Teatros del Canal until April 19 – is that it formally experiments with other registers such as poetry, diaries, monologues… How will they deal with such a demanding dramaturgy?
CR The most complete thing is to have these texts. Because a great poem will fall, but we do it in a very different way. It’s the same style exercise. So you rush it and try to make it as true as possible. However, at first I got a lot of respect He is a man who comes up to you on the road like this.
“In theater, you have a daily allowance to do as you dream, even if it doesn’t go that far.” Little Alteria
BUT Yes, it’s disappointing. It is complete to highlight the variety of registers within the same show. She is Yincana. I was moved from the first moment. But It’s a gift you must support. It requires a lot. Let’s go very quickly from one stage to another. You have to be very focused.
P. In this story, we see how something ordinary turns into the extraordinary thanks to the literature you loved. How important are these two factors on a day-to-day basis?
CR They are of course the basics. I am everything in life.
BUT This is what our office supports. The score is the words, thoughts and feelings of the characters. And because of that, we have built our way of being here.

P. In this sense, how does paper play theater in their lives?
CR This is our office. I am the one who works in the theater as an actress. Cinema and television fascinate me. Repetition and recording is something that fascinates me and is very difficult for me because I say when the tracks don’t have a chronology in what you interpret.
»But The script helped me do audiovisual things in a different way. It is not true that there are theater, film and television actors. We are actresses who adapt to any medium. Although the theater gives you something important, humility: you read the table, you support the text…
BUT It is also a space where things can really be experienced. Both on TV and in the cinema, everything goes so fast… It’s a different time, a different energy. You can go wrong in theater in general. And above all, when you’re on stage, it’s a repetition of every day. This fascinates me. When the feature ends, I think about doing it again because I feel like I don’t understand. The next day you have the option to redeem yourself or try other things. Sometimes it goes up or not, but you try hard to make it the way you dreamed it. However, it never grows this way.
“Cinema and television fascinate me, but theater humbles you, and for that I am grateful.” Carmen Ruiz
P. Do you ever have a script with that “hey yeah” feeling?
CR Sometimes yes. You also have to put your hand in your hand and decide to do it today.
BUT I am learning to be more generous. But this is me.
CR Me too. We seem to like it a lot. I always work with my psychologist in therapy. WITHIf someone does not value the log, it can only grow.
P. How do you read your beginning on the tablas?
BUT I am busy with entertainment on board, banquets and receptions. The first paid part of the office was the hacienda de Payasa Chinchilla. Then I met Cristina Rota. And so I gradually began to take on other responsibilities. If I was happy to come up with the whole coup, not if I was happy to spend it. She was always very respectful, asking for permission and forgiveness for confusion with the one who met me.
CR I was also exposed to an audience for the first time at Cristina Rota’s school, in La Katarsis del Tomatazo. Luego, like Malena, here bodas and fellowship. And when the school formed a company with three other classmates, it taught me a lot to value self-management. We do everything: clothes, sets, loading, unloading, jamming functions because there were fewer spectators than actors… But I worked professionally for the first time with Off Martelache.

P. Shortly after, in 2000, they both starred in two successful TV series that popularized their names. How did we live in that age?
BUT That was fascinating. It was part of something that was and still is a phenomenon. It was hard for us at first, but I bought an absolute cleanser. This popularity was less or less than I was used to. But now I’m more accessible with theater performances for those who don’t get in touch with me otherwise. If you’re on TV and aware of it, that’s also a complaint.
CR I believe that the era in which we decided to do something that would be very popular was different from today. Now, with the rise of platforms, everything is much more camouflaged. In our era, it was all we had. You entered people’s homes and the world saw it all. It was another very different popularity, which, as Malena says, was a rebajando.
P. From that list There’s nobody here long live members Gemma Cuervo, Mariví Bilbao and Emma Penella. This is the kind of generation like Malena’s father, Héctor Alterio, who played the tabla until his last moment. How was working with him?
BUT It was fascinating. They were absolutely exemplary and we followed them on tiptoe. That is my aspiration. They are a generation very devoted to their office, they like everything, they are very humble and generous.
»Wait until the last moment to engage in life with great dignity. Because work is life for them. Let’s look at much less, but let’s look at an example. Please note that something about this is followed by the younger generation.
P. Have you ever thought about pulling out the towel or leaving it in?
CR I have many posts, but I don’t want to throw in the towel anymore. I believe you have to move forward. He holds this profession. that’s it intermittent, sometimes unpleasant, but others are wonderful and bring you much joy. It’s a long road where you can’t lose focus.
BUT I was quite lucky because I was always alternating between theatre, television and cinema. No, I have big stops. Yes, I thought about it: “This is not needed, I am the poorest…”. But it has another function and how can I stop it? Yes, it’s amazing. I feel like I’m floating, but inside the feeling that’s my land, that’s what I want to do. I keep getting better and better days but I can’t stop it. Ace no.
P. Go to the theater sometimes…
CR Ok and now on the topic of AI…
BUT Man, this theater guy will never die. I told Núria Espert many years ago when I was in full swing of Nobody Alive Here. One day I met her, I was happy and thought to myself: “How good, Malena, your phenomenal idea is. And what about the theater?”. I say, “Okay, time to watch TV…”. “Okay, okay, that’s good, but don’t forget the theater. Cinema and television sometimes forget you, but theater does notLike something, theater always.
An extraordinary life followed by Mariano Tenconi
Written between 2016 and 2017, An extraordinary life emerged as a study related to different forms of writing and the desire to read it in depth Ulysses James Joyce, written by Mariano Tenconi Blanco. Monologues in the first or third person, dialogues, intimate diaries or games with a time structure if this proposal results in a simpler assumption being used after this full formal investigation.
“We have to find a balance between the literary quest and the usual life achievements that we all go through: the death of our fathers, romances, desire, love…”. It all starts with the friendship of two friends, Blanca and Aurora. “There’s something about friendship that has a power of endurance that love sometimes doesn’t. It’s a feeling that suits me, an emotion that can accompany my whole life”, he explains.
Released in Argentina, in Spain it presents a new version adapted to our context and starring Malena Alterio and Carmen Ruiz. “Geography was not necessary. What happened could have happened in Argentina, here or in Germany. We don’t want that to happen in Argentina because it seems to me that I will give her a lie in a job that is actually very much in demand.”
In this case, I felt that the scenography was also playing with space-time. “The work takes place in many times and places,” he says. From the beginning of the earth to the end of the world. “The Requirement and Requirement of the Spectator’s Imagination”. We go to the house from below. “Play with the idea of belonging, of returning home, start from poetic spaces”.
