The trial against Luigi Mangione is postponed until 2027

The federal trial against Luigi Mangione, accused of the death of a top executive of a health insurer in the United States, was postponed until January 2027, according to court documents published on Thursday.

Mangione, 27, is charged with the December 2024 killing of Brian Thompson, then CEO of UnitedHealthcare. He faces a federal trial and another in New York state court.

The federal trial, initially scheduled for October, will now take place on January 25, 2027.

His lawyers had requested postponements in both trials, arguing a very tight judicial calendar that would make adequate defense preparation impossible.

The state-level process will take place on September 8, after it was also postponed on Wednesday.

In both cases, Luigi Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty, risks life in prison.

The homicide in December 2024 was recorded on surveillance cameras and shook the United States as the deep discontent of a part of the public towards health insurance systems came to light.
