Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens will deliver the first State of the City address at a city school

Syracuse, NY – Mayor Sharon Owens will deliver her first State of the City address at the end of the month at Nottingham High School.

The choice to speak at a city school follows a series of outreach efforts the new mayor has made to engage young residents since her landslide election victory in November.

As part of her transition, Owens founded the “GenNEXT” committee, which focuses on supporting children, teens and young adults. The committee was co-chaired by Syracuse Common Councilor-at-Large Rasheada Caldwell; Juhanna Rogers, senior vice president of racial equity and social impact at CenterState CEO; and Indaria Jones, program manager at Syracuse University’s Couri Hatchery Business Incubator.

Owens also held a series of community dialogue events earlier this month for young residents, who he invited to meet with local leaders and city officials to discuss their concerns and ideas.

The mayor’s office said the speech will take place on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. at a school on the city’s east side. Doors open at 5pm. Registration will have to wait, and the city plans to post an online registration link later this week.

Owens’ speech will be the second in a row held at the city’s school building. Former Mayor Ben Walsh delivered his eighth and final address of 2025 at Grant High School on the city’s north side.

Syracuse’s mayors are required by the city charter to present an annual report to the common council, and have historically done so through a State of the City address.
