Smriti Mandhana creates history, shatters 28-year-old ODI world record

Indian opener Smriti Mandhana broke a long-standing world record during India’s third match of the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup against South Africa at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakapatnam on Thursday.

Mandhana, who scored 23 runs off 32 balls, breached 970 runs in a calendar year in Women’s ODIs, setting a new world record and overtaking Belinda Clark’s record set in 1997.

The 29-year-old stitched a 55-run opening partnership with Pratika Rawal after South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first, before the middle order collapsed.
The star Indian batter has now scored 982 runs in 17 innings at an average of 57.76. She has slammed four centuries and with at least five more matches, Mandhana could become the first woman to 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year.

Mandhana’s tally of four centuries in 2025 is the joint-second most in a calendar year, only behind South Africa’s Tazmin Britz, who has five tons this year. Mandhana also hit four tons in 2024, which was a record at the time before she Britz broke it.

Mandhana has cemented her place as one of the greats in the ODI format, slamming 13 centuries, which is the most by an opener and joint-second most overall. She has 4942 runs in 111 matches, making her the fifth-highest run-getter in the format.
