Representatives of various associations and collectives from the Brazilian community in Portugal participated in a meeting at the Brazilian Embassy in Lisbon this Thursday, October 9th. The group requested the meeting from ambassador Raimundo Carreiro, to present some of the concerns of Brazilians in Portugal.

Among the claims presented are the cases of xenophobia and violence against women, the difficulty in obtaining assistance at the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum (AIMA)as well as concern about the end of the decree-law that recognizes all expired documents as valid. The feeling of insecurity increases with the recently created Foreigners and Borders Unit (UNEF), focused on monitoring immigrants in the country.

These requests were unanimous among the entities present and have already had been taken for dialogue with Portugal at the annual meeting of the subcommittee on Consular Affairs and Movement of Personsheld in Lisbon recently. At the time, Brazil transmitted that to “the Brazilian community will not be harmed if these deadlines are not met by the Government”.

The topic of education was also presented by participants at the meeting today, mainly the non-recognition of the Porto Seguro Treaty in the collection of university fees. In some courses and universities, the amount charged is ten times higher compared to Portuguese and other European students. All points were taken note of by the diplomatic team.

Ambassador Raimundo Carreiro assured that he is in constant dialogue with the Portuguese Government, mainly with the Secretary of State for Migration Rui Armindo Freitas. The topics on the agenda are always the documentation issue and the removal of immigrants from the territory due to rejections in the processes.

This was the second meeting held between the embassy and representatives of the Brazilian community this year, the first being before the summit between Brazil and Portugal. The possibility of new meetings to discuss specific topics was agreed and the embassy team reiterated the ongoing dialogue with the community.
