Google is once again reshaping its workplace culture — this time, by limiting one of its most flexible employee perks. Then in April, hundreds from the platforms and devices unit, responsible for Android, Pixel, Chrome, Fitbit, and more, were let go. By August, 35% of managers overseeing smaller teams were terminated, and in September, over 200 contract workers developing AI products lost their jobs.

What does the new “Work From Anywhere” rule mean for employees?

Google’s once-generous “Work From Anywhere” policy, introduced in 2020, allowed staff to work remotely from any location (other than home) for up to four weeks per year. But now, the company has quietly altered the rule to make even one day count as a full week, according to CNBC, as per areport by The Street.
“Whether you log 1 WFA (work from anywhere) day or 5 WFA days in a given standard work week, 1 WFA week will be deducted from your WFA weekly balance,” reads an internal document outlining the new rule, as quoted in a report by The Street.

During an internal all-hands meeting, John Casey, Google’s vice president of performance and rewards, explained that WFA “was meant to meet Googlers where they were during the pandemic.” He added, “The policy was always intended to be taken in increments of a week and not be used as a substitute for working from home in a regular hybrid workweek.”

The updated policy also bars employees from working out of other Google offices in different states or countries during WFA days, citing “legal and financial implications of cross-border work.” Those who do work from other locations must align with the time zone of that region, as per areport by The Street.

Who is exempt and what are the penalties?

The update won’t apply to all employees. Workers stationed at data centers or those required to be physically present in offices are expected to be exempt. However, the internal document warns that violations of the revised policy could result in disciplinary action, or even job termination.

The changes are part of a broader cultural reset within Google. Earlier this year, the company reportedly issued warnings to remote staff, cautioning they could lose their jobs if they failed to appear in the office at least three days a week, as per areport by The Street.

How does this fit into the wider tech industry trend?

Google’s move mirrors actions taken by other tech leaders like Amazon, Dell, Samsung, and Intel, all of which have pulled back on remote work flexibility. Some have even mandated full-time office attendance.

Despite these shifts, national office foot traffic still lags pre-pandemic levels. Placer.ai data shows that U.S. office visits in August were down 34.3% compared to August 2019. Yet, surveys suggest many workers remain committed to flexibility, as per areport by The Street.
