A Bike sharing in European countries generates 305 million euros in benefits. At the same time, it encourages active living, which contributes to citizens’ health and prevents emissions of polluting gases.
As The accounts were carried out as part of a study requested by EIT Urban Mobility and Cycling Industries Europe (CIE), which was carried out by EY. The study included 150 European cities (located in 27 EU countries, plus the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Norway), whose fleets involve a total of 438,000 bicycles.
The analysis focuses on an economical means of transport, which allows to reduce expenses, hours lost in traffic and the maintenance of jobs.
By encouraging active mobility, it prevents chronic diseases, resulting in joint savings of 40 million euros in healthcare. The relief from traffic jams leads to an increase in productivity of around 760 thousand hours, which is worth 30 million euros and guarantees 6 thousand jobs.
At the same time, the emission of 46 thousand tons of carbon and 200 tons of harmful air pollutants into the atmosphere is avoided. At the same time, every euro invested in fleets gives a return of 10%.
By 2030, the study points out, the benefits could grow to up to one billion euros per year, allowing 13,000 jobs to be maintained, while the financial return would grow to up to 75% of public expenditure dedicated to policies linked to the use of bicycles.. At the same time, the emission of 224 thousand tons of carbon would be avoided.
