This Wednesday, October 15th, former communist deputy António Filipe ruled out the possibility of giving up on the race for Belém, emphasizing that his candidacy “does not depend on any other and is not replaceable”.
“The possibility of withdrawing is completely out of the question. And I also have support from Abril’s military, which I will make public in due course. And therefore, my candidacy, for its purposes, for the political space it proposes to occupy, is not afraid of any other candidacy and is not replaceable”he stated after being asked about the appeal by Vasco Lourenço, who supports António José Seguro, for his withdrawal in the name of a union on the left in these presidential elections.
The presidential candidate supported by the PCP spoke to journalists after a meeting with the association AMPLOS – Association of Mothers and Fathers for Freedom of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, in Lisbon.
The PCP leader said that he will move forward “regardless of the candidates that already existed” when he presented himself and of the “candidates that may exist”, justifying that he does not identify with the candidates “supported by the political forces that have dominated politics in Portugal”.
DN knows that the PCP never considered a joint candidacy with other parties and, just like in the Local Government, preferred to follow the path alone. António Filipe has the respect of left-wing parties, but he was considered a political option by the PCP, so the Left Bloc also opted to have a candidacy, in this case Catarina Martins.
