The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, visited this Wednesday the municipality of El Higo, Veracruz, and the area affected by the overflowing of the river in Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosí, two of the five states affected by the torrential rains a week ago that, So far, they have left 66 dead and 75 missing.
In addition to severe flooding with thousands of victims and damage to homes and infrastructure.
The Presidency spokesperson indicated in a statement that Sheinbaum arrived at noon in Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosí, which was affected by the overflowing of the river, where he led a delegation of Government officials to attend to needs, such as opening roads, restoring electricity and food supplies, cleaning, accommodation and the rescue of personal property.

The Mexican president “has personally assumed command of the response to this contingency, both on the ground and in nightly meetings” of the National Emergency Committee to follow up on the relief efforts, together with his cabinet, in addition to the governors of the five states and the government representatives who were sent to coordinate actions in the most affected areas.
In Tamazunchale, the president, also accompanied by Governor Ricardo Gallardo, even participated in one of the censuses that Mexico’s public servants carry out in all the affected communities.
In addition, the head of the Secretariat of National Defense (Defense), Ricardo Trevillapersonally attended one of the airlifts established to the inhabitants of a mountainous area in the state of Hidalgo to deliver humanitarian aid. And the Navy’s, Raymundo Morales, directed the relief efforts in the state of Veracruz.

Sheinbaum confirmed this Wednesday that the number of deaths due to the rains and floods recorded in different states in the center of the country rose to 66, while the federal government activates airlifts and prioritizes care in 191 isolated communities.
“There are 66 people who unfortunately died and 75 people have not yet been located,” said the president during her morning press conference, and noted that the number of fatalities would be updated during the day in a new official report.
As of Tuesday, authorities had reported 64 deaths.
The president explained that the federal government has classified 191 communities as “priority”, a criterion based mainly on the percentage of affected homes and announced that her government will offer daily reports on damage and support actions, and estimated that by next Monday it could have a more complete balance on affected homes.
In total, 111 municipalities have been affected and 191 localities remain cut off, although the number gradually decreases as the reopening of roads progresses.
