The mobile app of ChatGPT, one of the most popular AI-powered chatbots, is showing signs of slowing growth. New user growth has slowed significantly since April, according to an analysis by Apptopia, a third-party app intelligence provider. This suggests that the app may have reached its peak in terms of the number of new global downloads.
Although the app continues to record millions of downloads per day, growth in daily active users worldwide has stabilized in recent weeks. This development could be due to market saturation or increasing competition. Google in particular has gained popularity with its new AI product Gemini, which launched in September with the new AI image model Nano Banana.
Another factor that may have influenced user behavior is the changes to ChatGPT’s AI model. An update intended to make the AI less sycophantic was released in April, followed by the release of GPT-5 in August, which was also described as less personal. These changes may have resulted in users spending less time on the app and opening it less often.
Interestingly, Apptopia’s analysis shows that the average time US users spend on the app has decreased by 22.5% since July. The average number of sessions per user also decreased by 20.7%. This could indicate that the experimental phase with the app is over and that it is now being used more as part of the daily routine.
For OpenAI, this means the company may need to invest in marketing efforts or introduce new features to bring the app’s core metrics back up. The initial novelty of the app alone is no longer enough to generate further growth. However, the stabilization of user numbers could also be a sign that the app has found its core user base that uses it regularly.
