A massive cyberattack on Seattle-based security firm F5 Inc. has rocked the IT world. According to industry reports, state-backed hackers from China are responsible for the attack. The intruders had undetected access to the company’s networks for over a year and, among other things, stole parts of the source code of the BIG-IP software, which is used by numerous Fortune 500 companies and government agencies.
F5’s BIG-IP products are an essential part of many IT systems in large organizations. They offer features such as load balancing and security mechanisms designed to protect access to applications. Experts warn that stealing the source code could allow hackers to identify and exploit vulnerabilities to monitor and manipulate sensitive data.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued an urgent warning asking all federal agencies to update their F5 technology by October 22nd. The UK’s National Cyber Security Center has also issued a warning, urging customers to check their systems for possible compromises and install the latest security updates.
The Chinese government has denied the allegations and emphasized that China rejects and combats hacking activities. However, there remains great concern that the stolen information could be used by the hackers to launch further attacks on F5’s customers. The security firm has already provided its customers with a threat detection guide to protect themselves against the malware called Brickstorm used by the hackers.
