During a government shutdown, many federal employees and military personnel face significant financial challenges. To counteract these, the Fort Worth-based company First Command Financial Services Inc. has launched a support program. This program offers interest-free salary advances and loan assistance to ease the financial burden of those affected.
First Command, founded in 1958 by retired Lt. Col. Carroll Payne, specializes in supporting veterans and active military personnel. With over 300,000 customers, 69% of whom are veterans or active military, the company provides a critical financial lifeline in times of uncertainty and financial stress.
Mark Steffe, president and CEO of First Command, emphasized that the company has offered similar support during previous shutdowns in 2013 and 2018. He explained that First Command’s goal is to ensure that military families and other federal employees are not financially harmed by government decisions or inactions.
First Command’s offer includes salary advances of up to six months with no limit on the amount of each advance. In addition, the company works with its customers to find solutions to existing loan payments. Early withdrawals from fixed-term deposit accounts are also possible without penalty.
Another example of support during the shutdown is San Antonio-based USAA, which provided over $274 million in interest-free loans to 74,000 customers. However, some customers reported difficulty applying for these loans because USAA conducted harsh credit checks and rejected applications based on debt-to-income ratios.
