The company OpenAI has announced a new function for ChatGPT that will mark a before and after for certain users. Starting in December, verified adults will be able to access suggestive content, including erotic interactionssomething that until now was totally blocked.
This decision comes after months of work on a more robust age verification system. As explained by the company, the idea is to guarantee that ChatGPT can identify when you are talking to a minor and automatically activate filters and restrictions for inappropriate content.
On the contrary, Adult and verified users will be able to access a less restrictive versionin which the chatbot will maintain freer and more expressive conversations, always within the established legal and ethical limits.
The new option can be activated in the privacy settings. This content will still go through automatic and human moderation filters, but will allow romantic or intimate interactions, always under explicit consent.
The goal is to “treat adults like adults.”
The announcement was made by Sam Altman himself, CEO of OpenAI, through his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter). He explained that This update is part of the company’s principle of “treating adult users like adults”which will allow the chatbot to adopt a more natural personality.
In recent months, OpenAI had tightened ChatGPT restrictions to avoid risks with users facing mental health issues. This reduced behaviors considered “sycophantic” or potentially harmful.
“We know this made it less useful and enjoyable for many users without mental health issues, but we wanted to fix it,” Altman explained.
Now, with new protection and moderation tools, OpenAI believes it can relax limitations without putting user safety at risk. Its intention is to balance the freedom of expressionifrom of adult users with the safety of minors.
