A Nvidia is about to carry out the largest installation of artificial intelligence (AI) chips in its history in the European Unionwith the arrival of approximately 12,600 semiconductors at the mega data center in Sines, Portugal.

This order includes the new Blackwell Ultra GB300 graphics processing units, which should arrive in the first quarter of 2026 and will serve to support Microsoft.

This milestone highlights the importance of the Sines Data Campus, as multinationals such as Oracle, Amazon Web Services and Google are also integrating this advanced technology.

“This is a decisive moment for Start Campus. With this partnership, our first SIN01 building reaches its maximum capacity, and is already expanding due to high demand”, highlighted Robert Dunn, CEO of Start Campus.

Work on the second building, SIN02, was scheduled to begin in the middle of this year, but was delayed, in part due to United States restrictions that initially excluded Portugal from a list of countries considered “allies and partners”.

Nscale, a British company, is implementing Nvidia chips in several countries and considers that its entry into Sines demonstrates its ability to provide “advanced infrastructure in the European Union”.

This iInstallation could be crucial for Portugal’s candidacy for one of the AI gigafactories co-financed by the European Union.

Gonçalo Regalado, CEO of Banco de Fomento, has already announced that there is a “very strong consortium” of partners ready to attract this investment, which requires around four billion euros and 100 thousand graphics processors.

In turn, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, praised the location of Sines, stating that it “demonstrates the convergence of the digital transition with Portugal’s unique geographic position”, becoming a relevant digital center for new submarine cables.

He also highlighted that the investment will allow Portugal to operate in a safe and sustainable way, in line with the carbon neutrality goals for 2028.
