14 deaths of compatriots in US detention centers

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that since Donald Trump’s second term, 14 deaths of compatriots have been recorded in immigration detention centers managed by ICE.

During a press conference at the Los Angeles consulate, Vanessa Calva Ruiz, general director of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning of the Foreign Ministry, indicated that the Mexican Government will ask the United States for explanations about the conditions in which Mexicans are kept in the Adelanto, California, detention center.

In these centers, four Mexican deaths were recorded, supposedly due to medical complications, although the legal cause was not established.

The official confirmed that the Mexican Government will join as amicus curiae in a class action lawsuit against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) for the conditions in which migrants are detained.

It is unacceptable, they say

The press conference was attended by Antonia Tovar, wife of José Guadalupe Ramos Solano, the Mexican who died in the Adelanto center on March 25.

The Foreign Ministry official stated that the latest case of a compatriot who died in unclear circumstances demonstrates an alarming and “unacceptable” trend for the protection of Mexicans abroad.

It was detailed that the Adelanto Detention Center is managed by a private company, GEO Group, but legally ICE is responsible for the treatment of detainees.

Aid becomes complicated

Carlos González Gutiérrez, Mexico’s consul general in Los Angeles, said that between June 2025 and March, 1,809 were held at the downtown Los Angeles detention center.

In addition, compatriots have access to consular protection expeditiously; However, in Adelanto, being in a rural area, help is complicated.

The consul indicated that there is no flow of information to know the situation of the detained Mexicans and 50% are compatriots with more than 10 years in the United States, that is, with a life already established in that country.

The Mexican Government stated that it will continue to support detained migrants with lawyers, support for their families and legal support.

There will also be the sending of diplomatic notes to demand justice, and in the case of deaths, provide all support, such as repatriation of the remains.
