Syracuse lost 14 people to homicide in 2025: Syracuse had 14 homicides last year, with victims ranging from 11-year-old Jeremiah Huff to 68-year-old Lawrence Baker. Ten of the victims were men, two women and two boys. Only two of those homicide cases remain open, while the third was ruled self-defense, giving Syracuse police an 86% clear for 2025.

Mom accused of killing Neffy rejects plea deal; her children expected to testify against her: The mother of Nefertiti “Neffy” Harris officially rejected a guilty plea on Thursday, a day after her lawyers told a court she wanted to take responsibility for the child’s death. Latasha Mott’s mother is expected to go to trial later this month. Prosecutors revealed Thursday that two of Mott’s children are expected to be called to testify against her.

The state Department of Education recently released the latest math and ELA assessment results for students in grades three through eight, and one school district in Onondaga County was among the top 30 in New York for proficiency levels. House approves $2 million to remove lead water pipes in Syracuse, Onondaga County: The House passed a series of spending bills Thursday that included more than $2 million to help Syracuse and Onondaga County remove lead pipes that bring water to hundreds of local homes. The federal aid comes at a critical time for Syracuse, which failed to meet its promise last year to remove 3,000 lead water pipes throughout the city.

Looking ahead
A 1920s Syracuse theater that’s been vacant for decades could get new life: A theater will soon return to Syracuse’s Hawley Green neighborhood after more than 75 years. The Grove Theatre, LLC, led by local director Garrett Heater, has been awarded a $230,000 New York State Economic Development Grant to undertake renovations at the site of the old Avon Theater on Hawley Avenue. For Garrett Heater, president of Syracuse’s Covey Theater Company, the grant is a dream come true.
