The European Union is informally considering including new countries without full voting rights, while the continent’s foreign ministers meet, today, Monday, in Luxembourg to discuss the files of Ukraine, the Middle East, and other issues.
A European official told Politico that the proposal to include new countries is still in its early stages and requires the approval of all EU member states.
This proposal would allow countries such as Ukraine, Moldova and Montenegro to enjoy the benefits of EU membership without veto power.
In a related context, European Union foreign ministers will meet in Luxembourg on Monday to discuss the rapidly developing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sepha is set to join EU ministers to provide insights into the situation on the battlefield and Kiev’s most urgent aid needs.
The Ukrainian minister is also likely to provide a briefing on the latest developments in the diplomatic efforts led by the United States.
The consultations come days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
It is noteworthy that Trump recently announced that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest.
Other files
Ministers will also discuss EU proposals to use billions of euros in Russian assets to finance a reparations loan to Ukraine, and a 19-nation sanctions package on Russia, including a ban on liquefied natural gas imports.
Monday’s meeting is the first meeting of European Union foreign ministers since the ceasefire entered into force in the Gaza Strip.
The European Union was marginalized in efforts to stop the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, but senior officials confirmed that the EU countries aim to play an effective role in ensuring stability in the region.
Other topics on Monday’s agenda include the Union’s relations with the Indo-Pacific region and current developments in Sudan, Moldova and Georgia.
