Anyone arriving from outside the Schengen Area at Portuguese and European airports from this Sunday, October 12th, will undergo stricter border control. On this date, the Entry and Exit System (EES), which will affect tourists and other travelers.
Starting Sunday, everyone crossing the border will have to go through a procedure that includes passport scanninga collecting fingerprints and the facial biometrics registration. The exception is for citizens with a European passport. This data will be stored in the European system and can be consulted at any border post in the Schengen Area.
All entries and exits will be recorded in this system, managed by European Union (EU). For example, if a citizen exceeds the permitted length of stay in the EU, the system will automatically detect the irregularity.

The objective, according to the EU, is to “strengthen internal security, with better detection of false identities, use of fraudulent documentation, irregular entries and cross-border threats, in addition to contributing to the prevention of human trafficking and aid to illegal immigration”.
The system will also allow real-time monitoring of migratory flows and the stay of citizens of third countries.
O Consulate General of Brazil in Lisbon warned this week on social media about the entry into force of the new system. “With the new system, tourists and other short-term travelers will now have their biometric and travel data recorded when entering and leaving the Schengen Area, including time and location of entry and exit, passport information, fingerprints and facial photography,” says the publication.
