Amazon Begins Building Huge New Warehouse in Upstate NY (Report)


Amazon has begun building a massive new warehouse in Upstate New York, according to a new report.

The retail giant has begun construction on a 3.2 million square foot distribution center in the Capital Region. Albany Business Review. The $621 million facility will be located near Exit 27 of the New York State Thruway in Montgomery County, Florida.

According to Business Review, the online retailer paid $13.5 million for 143 acres of land. Amazon will receive $30 million in tax breaks and an estimated $44.9 million in property tax breaks over 15 years, the Montgomery County Industrial Development Agency said.

Construction began in late December and will be completed in late 2027 or early 2028, the IDA said. Almost 400 construction workers will be employed during the project.

According to previous reports, the warehouse is expected to be 4.5 stories tall and employ at least 750 people in three shifts a day. Amazon would also hire hundreds of additional part-time and seasonal workers, according to the Business Review.

The facility is expected to use robotic storage systems instead of traditional warehouse racks. Orders will be picked, packed and shipped 24 hours a day, seven days a week to local delivery centers.

Amazon operates a similar facility in Clay, which totals five floors and 3.8 million square feet. The Syracuse-area warehouse opened in 2022 and also uses robotics combined with human workers.

Amazon’s new warehouse will be just outside of Amsterdam, about 35 miles from Albany. It will be on Route 5S, near the 1.9 million square foot Target distribution center, less than 2 miles from the NYS Thruway’s Amsterdam exit.
