Doha- Peace talks between the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan began today, Saturday, in the Qatari capital, in a step that comes after the escalation of border clashes between the two countries over the past few days, which resulted in deaths and injuries on both sides.
These talks come amid a state of regional tension, following the extension of a 48-hour truce between the two countries yesterday, in an attempt to contain the escalation and avoid aggravation of the conflict.
According to official statements, the Afghan government delegation is headed by Defense Minister Muhammad Yaqoob, while the Pakistani delegation consists of Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and Intelligence Chief General Asim Malik, in a move that seeks to find urgent solutions to the issues of cross-border terrorism and restore stability and security along the border line extending to 2,600 kilometers.

Fierce ground battles broke out between the two former allies and Pakistani air strikes across the two countries’ disputed borders after Islamabad demanded Kabul to rein in militants who had escalated their attacks in Pakistan, saying they were carrying out their attacks from safe havens in Afghanistan.
Analysts confirm that the success of these talks may contribute to calming tensions, establishing mechanisms for security coordination, and enhancing stability in a vital region suffering from ongoing turmoil, with difficult humanitarian consequences.
Earlier, the Pakistani Defense Minister accused Kabul of fighting his country on behalf of India, and spoke of the 10,000 attacks the country has been subjected to since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021, resulting in the killing of 3,844 members of the army and security forces, according to General Asif.
This tour comes in the context of the ongoing Qatari mediation in managing sensitive regional files, after Doha demonstrated its experience and ability to provide neutral platforms for dialogue, as happened previously in facilitating negotiations between the Taliban and the United States before the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan in 2021.
Faisal Al-Mudahka (editor-in-chief of the Qatari newspaper Gulf Times) said – in a statement to Al Jazeera Net – that the State of Qatar was accustomed to playing a pivotal role in managing sensitive files at the regional and international levels until the role of mediation became inherent to its identity.
He pointed out that Doha’s diplomacy over the years has proven its ability to achieve tangible results in the areas of political mediation and conflict resolution, and that Qatar’s diplomatic history is full of successes that have strengthened its position as a country capable of bridging viewpoints between different parties, whether in regional conflicts or on the international arena.

Qatari mediation is not limited to providing platforms for dialogue, but also extends to supporting practical mechanisms to coordinate security efforts and reduce risks on the border, which contributes to stability in the region and creating a safer environment for the affected peoples, according to the same spokesman.
For his part, Sadiq Al-Amari (Director General of the Qatar Press Centre) stressed that Qatar’s well-established diplomatic reputation at the international level reflects the great confidence that the international community gives to Doha in its ability to play a constructive and effective role in resolving regional and international conflicts and disputes.
Al-Amari explained – in a statement to Al Jazeera Net – that Doha has proven over the past years that neutrality, credibility, and commitment to peaceful dialogue are its basic tools in bringing the views of different parties closer together, whether on complex political issues or conflicts that threaten the stability of the region.
