Franclim Carvalho thus becomes the fourth Portuguese coach of the Rio club in recent years, following spells by Luís Castro, Bruno Lage and, finally, Artur Jorge. The move comes shortly after the departure of Anselmi, who was fired less than two weeks ago despite a 2-1 win against Bragantino.
A former assistant to Artur Jorge, the Portuguese coach knows the club’s reality well and even led the team in an official match, in the victory against Corinthians, in the 26th round of the 2024 Brasileirão, replacing the main coach who was suspended.
Arriving at technical command also fulfills a personal ambition for Franclim Carvalho, who refused to join other technical committees to make the leap to head coach – an intention that was known within the club.
The appointment gives even more strength to the Portuguese presence in the Brazilian championship, where there are now five coaches in place. How the DN Sport highlighted in a report this Thursday (2), Brazilian football is experiencing a moment of increasing openness to foreign coaches (especially Portuguese and Argentine), in a context in which several local coaches have lost space amid a technical crisis.
Franclim thus joins names like Abel Ferreira, Leonardo Jardim, Luís Castro and Artur Jorge in a championship increasingly marked by the Portuguese presence on Brazilian soil.
