Argentina declares the CJNG, a Mexican cartel, a ‘terrorist organization’

The government of President Javier Milei of Argentina announced Thursday that it declared Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) a “terrorist organization,” a decision in line with the United States, its main geopolitical partner.

Milei’s Office said that this measure is part of “the framework of international commitments assumed by Argentina in the fight against terrorism and its financing.”

According to a statement, the inclusion of the CJNG in the Argentine registry of people and entities linked to terrorist acts and their financing “enables the application of financial sanctions and operational restrictions aimed at limiting the capacity for action of these criminal organizations and their members.”

At the same time, it “protects the Argentine financial system from being used for illicit purposes” and reinforces cooperation with other countries that designated this cartel a “terrorist organization,” the text added.

The US designated the CJNG as a ‘terrorist organization’

In February 2025, the United States designated the CJNG and six other transnational criminal groups from Mexico, El Salvador and Venezuela as “foreign terrorist organizations” as part of the President Donald Trump administration’s offensive against drug trafficking.

In its statement on Thursday, Milei’s Office emphasizes that the CJNG emerged in July 2010 and became one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world, with a presence in Mexico, the United States and at least 40 countries, including Argentina.

Its leader and founder, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, died in February in an operation in Mexico with the support of United States intelligence, which offered $15 million for his capture.

Milei’s government has already designated entities considered the same by the United States as terrorist organizations, such as branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan, the Palestinian jihadist group Hamas and the Iranian Quds Force.
