Students at Pinecrest Academy in Cumming recently had the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with NASA astronaut Col. Mike Fincke, who is currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This event was part of the ‘Amateur Radio on the International Space Station’ program, which aims to connect students directly with astronauts to promote interest in science and engineering.

During the session, students asked questions about the everyday challenges and experiences of living in space. Col. Fincke explained that sleeping in zero gravity is a unique experience because there is no up or down. He sleeps in a small room that allows him to sleep standing up, wrapped in a sleeping bag.

Another topic was nutrition in space. Fincke explained that although the astronauts are given a certain amount of food, it is so plentiful that they can eat as much as they want. Tortillas, which serve as edible plates and are ideal for consumption in space, are particularly popular.

Students were also interested in the future of space travel, particularly the possibility of sending humans to Mars by 2035. Fincke emphasized that this is a realistic time frame, but one that presents many challenges and requires the collaboration of engineers and scientists.

Fincke answered the question about the effects of weightlessness on the human body by pointing out that regular training on board the ISS is necessary to prevent the breakdown of muscles and bones. The astronauts train for around two hours every day to stay fit.

At the end of the session, Fincke encouraged the students to study hard and always do their best. This inspiring message highlights the importance of education and collaboration to meet the challenges of the future.
