astronauts report approach to the Moon and first detailed images of the lunar surface

The Artemis II mission entered its third day with the crew reporting the progressive approach to the Moon, visible and increasingly larger from the Orion capsule. “It’s definitely getting bigger”said astronaut Victor Glover, in a mission update released this Saturday, April 4.

According to NASA, astronauts have already managed to capture detailed images of the lunar surface during their trip, including large-scale formations. At the same time, the Earth begins to lose prominence in the field of view, appearing smaller as the ship moves away.

The change in perspective was also highlighted by Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, who described the experience as “phenomenal”. The astronaut highlighted how quickly the visual picture changes throughout the trip, with the planet becoming distant a few hours after departure.
