Attack on March for Life could lead to terrorism charges

The São Paulo Federation for Life, the entity that organized the March for Life this Saturday, wants the throwing of a Molotov cocktail against participants in the anti-abortion and euthanasia event, be “treated by authorities as the act of terrorism that it is”considering “it is urgent that everyone linked to him be investigated”.

The PSP detained the person responsible for the attack, which occurred late Saturday afternoon, next to the steps of the Assembly of the Republic, and the 39-year-old man will appear before the judge this Monday. Three other men were also identified, who the police force said were linked to a group with an anarchist connotation.

According to a statement, to which DN had access, the Portuguese Federation for Life will request an audience with the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neveswho this Sunday condemned the “failed attack” on the March for Life. And also to the Attorney General of the Republic, Amadeu Guerra, adding that he will act as an assistant in the legal process arising from the attack.

The organizing entity of the March for Life also argues that, “if a link between the attackers and any political organization is proven, it will be declared a terrorist organization”, under the terms of the Combating Terrorism Law. And he calls on “all those who, especially in the exercise of public powers, have used a tone of hatred against the pro-life movement in recent years – accusing us of countless inequities – to lay their hands on their conscience and understand the consequences of their speech”.

Not communicated, the Portuguese Federation for Life describes movements of a group of people who approached the stage of the demonstration, “with a provocative attitude”. An hour later, one of them took, from a box they were carrying, the incendiary device that he threw. to the place where participants in the protest against abortion and euthanasia were gathered.

“In view of the data collected – an act planned by a group of people who, for political reasons, seek to attack targets that cause impact – We have no doubt that we are facing a terrorist act”, declares the entity, adding that “had the ignition not failed and today we would be talking about the deaths of children and babies”.

Also according to the Portuguese Federation for Life, “the failure of the attack cannot hide the fact that a political organization planned and sought to carry out an attack with an incendiary device against a public event full of families, young people and children”.

In statements to DN, published in this Monday’s edition, the founder of the Security, Organized Crime and Terrorism Observatory, José Manuel Anes also declared that the attack against the March for Life could be seen as an act of terrorism.
