Beja Chamber asks the Government to launch the A26 by the end of the 1st semester

The construction of the A26 to Beja is an investment “determining for the development of the territory”, argued the municipality.

City council source contacted this Friday by the Lusa agency explained that this is the construction of “the highway, with two lanes in each direction, from the Malhada Velha roundabout, in the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo, to the Beja Airport roundabout”, a few kilometers from the district capital.

At this meeting, on the part of the Government, it was mentioned that the damage caused by the Kristin depression, in Leiria, “may affect compliance with the established deadline, leaving the indication that everything will be done to ensure that it is not exceeded”.

In the same meeting with Minister Pinto Luz, the railway was another of the issues discussed, with the Chamber requesting “urgency” in sending wagons “that run on ‘diesel’ and electricity” for the Alentejo Line.

This request aims to “recover some comfort for everyone who uses this means of transport until the start of electrification works on the route Beja – Casa Branca”.

“The minister committed to helping in this matter”confirmed the city council, in the same statement.

On March 11, 2025, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing said it had instructed Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), through a resolution approved by the Council of Ministers, “to proceed with the development of the necessary actions to carry out a set of priority road infrastructure projects”.

Main Itinerary 8 (IP8)/A26 is part of a total of “around 30 road routes defined as priority”, according to the ministry.
