Closing the election night in Portugal, the re-elected mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, was the last to speak and celebrate his victory, at almost 2:00 am this Monday, October 13th. “Another 30 thousand votes, it’s absolutely extraordinary”, he began by saying in reference to the results.
The coalition For you, Lisbon he also leaves with one more councilor, totaling eight for this new term. “Now we are going to make it, Lisbon is on the right path”, he stated, placing the blame on the opponents as well.
“The people of Lisbon were clear that they do not want instability,” he stated. “This stability demands a lot from us, an additional effort from all of us, of dialogue, of compromise, of moderation. We are the candidacy of the moderates, of the tolerant.”
Asked about dialogues to build a majority, Carlos Moedas refused an overture to Chega and stated that “a City Council does not have post-electoral coalitions”.
The mayor called on the opposition to “put Lisbon’s interests above all else”, something that he stated did not happen in this first term. “I had four very difficult years. These four years will not be so difficult, because I have 30 thousand more votes, I have one more councilor, that gives me enormous confidence.”
In a campaign headquarters that was completely packed with supporters, the mayor highlighted his good relationship with Luís Montenegro, who preferred to attend the election night in Porto. “I have his full support. He is a man who, above all, is a close friend. It’s as if he were here.”
