Blockade of the Strait of Hormuz limits ship transit to 5% compared to periods of peace

Since the beginning of the attack launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, only a small number of cargo ships and oil tankers, mostly Iranian, have crossed the Strait of Hormuz, according to the global trade observatory, Kpler.

A total of just 116 cargo ships and oil tankers crossed the strait between March 1 and 19, a number that represents a 95% drop compared to periods of peace, according to the group, based in Paris.

Of these crossings, 71 were carried out by oil tankers, of which more than half were loaded, and the majority of these ships sailed east. “Traffic is mainly provided by bulk carriers, oil tankers and container ships”, Richard Meade, editor-in-chief of Lloyd’s List, a magazine specializing in maritime information, said, according to the APF, during a press conference on Thursday.

“However, we found a slight increase in the number of methaners in circulation last week,” he added.
