The Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear) warned this Thursday, 2nd, that the rise in the price of kerosene, as a result of the war in the Middle East, will have “serious consequences” for the sector in the country.
On Wednesday, Brazilian state oil company Petrobras announced a 54.6% increase in the price of kerosene for April.
To mitigate the impact, the company offered payment facilities to airlines, which will be able to opt for an 18% increase from Monday and pay the remainder in six monthly installments, starting in July.
Abear highlighted in a statement that fuel prices in Brazil follow fluctuations in the international market, despite 80% of the fuel consumed being produced in the country.
The increase decided by Petrobras “has serious consequences for the opening of new routes and the provision of services, restricting the country’s connectivity and the democratization of air transport”, denounced the association.
Abear defended “the establishment of permanent mechanisms” in Brazil to reduce the volatility of kerosene prices.
The price of oil rose more than 4% today, after the President of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, promised to attack Iran with “very force” in the next two to three weeks.
Brent oil, an international reference, jumped 5%, to 106.22 dollars (92.07 euros) per barrel. US benchmark crude rose 4.2% to $104.36 (90.46 euros) per barrel.
In retaliation for the offensive launched by the US and Israel, on February 28, Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas normally transits.
