Brazilians Transform Artistic Space in Lisbon for Immigrants

A project created by Brazilian artists in Lisbon that recently gained a new home to call their own in the Portuguese capital: a project created in 2018, the gallery and cultural association NowHere started to operate in a space in the Penha de França region with a larger structure aimed at supporting immigrant and emerging artists living in Portugal.

The association’s new space is the subject of one of the reports shown on DN Brazil Radar this week.

The initiative was created by Pernambuco curator Cristiana Tejo and artist Marilá Dardot with the aim of transforming the experience of immigration into a meeting point for artistic production and reflection. With the growth of the network, however, and real estate speculation in the heart of the capital, the need for a larger physical space arose to host exhibitions, meetings and artistic mentoring.

Initial exposure

During the visit of DN Brazil In the new space, the new gallery’s first exhibition was on display, dedicated to Brazilian artist Diego Garcez, who has been part of the project for a few years. The exhibition brings together the artist’s recent works and presents a sample of his production developed in Lisbon, where he began to dedicate himself more intensely to the visual arts after working in the corporate world.

Garcez also participated in the first event held at the new headquarters, the launch of the book Ostrich – small studies on readinesspublished by Urutau. For the artist, having a studio within the collective space was decisive for the development of his production.
