bus with passengers falls into Padma river; at least 18 dead

BANGLADESH.— At least 18 people died when a bus which carried about 50 people fell into a large river in central Bangladesh while boarding a ferry, authorities said Thursday.

Wednesday afternoon the vehicle fell into the Padma riverin the district of Rajbariabout 84 kilometers from the capital, Dhaka, explained firefighter Dewan Sohel Rana.

The bus was heading to the capital from the southwestern district of Kushtiacoinciding with the people returning to their jobs behind him islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

According to Rana, many of the passengers swam to safety after the accident, but others were trapped.

A rescue boat joined the operation late Wednesday and pulled the bus out of the water, he said, adding that rescuers worked through the night to recover bodies and As of Thursday morning they had found 18.

Strong currents and rain interrupted rescue efforts overnight, he said. It was unclear if people were still missing.

The list of deceased included 10 women and two minorsaccording to the Fire Department and Civil Defense.
