Ceremony marks ten years of terrorist attacks in Brussels

The tributes took place in symbolic locations, such as the Zaventem airport and the Maelbeek metro station, where the attacks took place, as well as at the monument to the victims, on Rue de la Loi. King Philip and Prime Minister De Wever participated in the tributes, along with other Belgian and European authorities.

The royal couple expressed solidarity with the victims and laid a wreath next to a commemorative plaque in the airport’s departure area.. A minute of silence was observed, followed by artistic performances.

The 2016 attacks, claimed by the self-proclaimed Islamic State, caused more than 30 dead (Belgians, travelers and immigrants from various parts of the world who lived in Belgium) and more than 300 injured. The day was considered one of the bloodiest in Belgian history.

Six men were convicted in July 2023, six years after the crimes. Penalties range from 20 years in prison to life in prison.
