SAN FRANCISCO / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Coinbase has ushered in a new era for AI-powered transactions with the launch of the HTTP 402 protocol. This technology allows artificial intelligences to independently make payments in stablecoins, which has led to an exponential increase in transactions.

Coinbase’s adoption of the HTTP 402 protocol marks a significant step in the development of AI-powered payment systems. This protocol, originally designed as part of the Internet Communication Protocol, enables both artificial intelligence and humans to pay in stablecoins directly over the Internet. This innovation has led to an increase in transactions of over 10,000% in the last few weeks.
Coinbase introduced the HTTP 402 protocol in May to solve the Internet’s first major challenge: seamlessly integrating payment systems. The revival of Hypertext Transfer Protocol 402 creates a system that allows payments to be made directly and without the need for credit cards. Users receive an HTTP 402 “Payment Required” prompt upon request and can then send a signed stablecoin payment that is automatically verified.
The latest data from Dune Analytics shows that almost 500,000 x402 transactions were carried out between October 14th and October 20th, representing a 10,780% increase compared to the previous four weeks. On Friday, transaction activity hit a new high of 239,505 transactions, while Thursday saw a record volume of $332,000.
The increasing use of HTTP 402 has also caught the attention of venture capital firms such as a16z, which predicted in its State of the Crypto Industry 2025 report that autonomous transactions could reach $30 trillion by 2030. This development could have far-reaching effects on the way AI systems operate economically in the future.
Coinbase developers Kevin Leffew and Lincoln Murr emphasize that Ethereum is the ideal blockchain for implementing HTTP 402 due to its trustless settlement layer. This platform provides the necessary prerequisites for atomic payments, programmable policies and composable wallets, which significantly improves the efficiency of invoices and chargebacks.
