Cold Weather Advisory for New York until Tuesday afternoon – extremely cold conditions

At 1:09 a.m. Monday, the National Weather Service issued a Cold Weather Advisory in effect from 10:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Tuesday for Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties.

The weather service comments: “Bitterly cold wind chills as low as 20 degrees below zero as possible.

“Brokenly cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero will cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes,” comments the weather service. “This is a potentially dangerous situation to be outside. If you must be outside, be sure to cover all exposed skin. Frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less with apparent temperatures of 15 below or below. Keep pets indoors as much as possible.”

Understanding cold weather warnings

Cold weather warning: Be careful. A cold weather advisory is issued when seasonally low air temperatures or wind chill values are expected or occur, but not extremely low values. Make sure you and your loved ones dress appropriately and cover exposed skin when you go out.

Extreme Cold Warning: Take Action! An extreme cold warning is issued when dangerously low air temperatures or wind chill values are expected or occur. If you are in an area with an extreme cold warning, avoid going outside. If you must go out, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and make sure at least one other person knows where you are. Update them when you reach your destination safely.

Extreme Freeze Watch: Be Prepared. An extreme cold watch is issued when dangerously low air temperatures or wind chill values are possible. As with the warning, adjust your plans to avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day. Make sure your car has at least half a tank of gas and update your winter survival kit.
