We are living through a difficult time in our lives as a collective. Not everything that appears to our eyes or is said and written is true. Not everything reprehensible that occurs is subject to sanction.
Between perceptions, virtual reality and narratives created with the purpose of deceiving, there is a journey that increasingly demands greater lucidity from each of us.
It is true that a certain voyeurism has taken hold over public figures, almost a certain obligation to striptease integral. However, we must not confuse gossip with transparency and, above all, we must not demand transparency in matters that do not matter to the res publica.
What is important are the behaviors and attitudes that citizens are allowed to appreciate and “judge” in accordance with the sovereign principle that we are all equal and, therefore, should be treated in the same way.
It is this axiom of mine that leads me to comment on three recent revelations.
1 – Rat Squad
We have been invaded by news from the Rato Police Station. What started out looking like a behavioral deviation from some PSP agents now takes on a different dimension.
Several agents would have been presented to the judicial authorities and nine agents would, in accordance with the law, have been placed in preventive detention.
What would have happened now is that six other agents, from the same police station, would be being investigated by the MP.
Especially shocking is the fragility of the victims: drug addicts and the homeless.
Also particularly shocking is that no relevant public position of the PSP hierarchy is known, which reveals a certain crisis of command and discipline. A particularly serious situation in a hierarchical force. Being silent may not be consent, but it reveals cowardly complicity, and citizens need to trust their police.
2 – Crime global
In this global world we live in, we learn about what happens many thousands of kilometers away.
More than a million revealed e-mails From Epstein, we learn: we live surrounded by perverse perverts; the powerful think they can do anything; poverty is not a good companion to resist the powerful; etc.
But what is truly relevant is that we don’t know who committed the crimes, no one was tried, there are no defendants, there are no court cases and, of course, there are no convicts.
The Epstein trial is good for distracting papal people: nobody saw it, nobody knows, nobody participated. A little more time and we will conclude that the victims were created by Artificial Intelligence in its prehistoric version…
And, above all, that what the “suicided” was about, in addition to the always opportune and cover-up sexual perversions of the powerful, there will be no “news”.
3 – The example
Doctor Salazar instilled in the Portuguese the abominable idea of “remedy”, leading the Portuguese to “live as usual”. So that everyone would think that this was the way, he spread the idea that he himself lived by eating the chickens and eggs that his faithful housekeeper produced in the gardens of São Bento. This, despite his regular, and unrevealed, Sunday lunches with the Espírito Santo family.
Democracy came to demand other examples. Equality, transparency and uniformity of treatment.
A good example was given by the current President of the Republic when he gave up the subsidy to which he was entitled.
A bad example is that of the former governor of the Bank of Portugal who, without breaking any rules, will certainly have a subsidy that derives from a privileged status in terms of value and age.
Democracy increasingly deals with privilege statutes with greater difficulty.
