Constitutional Court. PSDB rejects agreements on the left and wants IL to vote to approve Chega’s name

The appointment to external bodies, which is dragging on and going through six postponements, may be closer to completion because the PSD has a closed decision, wanting to avoid negotiating with the PS for the place on the Constitutional Court.

From what DN found, Luís Montenegro and Hugo Soares, president and general secretary, have sought validation of the Liberal Initiative so that, with the vote of the nine IL deputies, the inclusion of a Chega name in the Constitutional Court can be confirmed, in addition to two social democrats.

The PSD considers that having ceded the Ombudsman’s Office to the PS was a sign of openness to dialogue, but that current parliamentary representation requires Chega to be in the institutions. Realizing that the leading opposition party justifies having a seat in the Constitutional Court, the Social Democrats refuse, as the party with the most votes, to suggest just one name and cede the third to the PS, the third party with the most votes.

In view of the various criticisms of the STF after the veto of paragraphs in the Nationality Law, Montenegro agrees that there is a need to appoint judges who can reflect the electoral weight that the right gained in Portugal in the May elections.

The socialist general secretary, José Luís Carneiro, and the parliamentary leader Eurico Brilhante Dias, who are currently in Venezuela, have been monitoring the situation and the PS does not want to give up the possibility of nominating a name to approve the appointments for the Ratton Palace. Livre, with six deputies, gave, through Rui Tavares, the guarantee that Luís Montenegro could have parliamentary approval if he preferred to leave Chega out. The party will vote negatively, alongside other left-wing parties, on any name nominated by Chega. Therefore, a qualified majority would be possible if everyone wanted to exclude Chega.

Therefore, the Liberal Initiative is the joker that the Prime Minister is counting on to achieve two-thirds approval. In the fortnightly debate, he placed the party in the “central bloc”, placing the PS on the “left”.

Mariana Leitão makes this hypothesis depend on the names indicated by Chega and this morning she spoke out, on the social network X, against the hypotheses Paulo Otero, professor of law at the University of Lisbon who spoke out against the illegalization of Chega in Portugal, and João Pacheco Amorim, PhD in Public Law from the Faculty of Law of Coimbra (2005) and Professor at the Faculty of Law of Porto. “They don’t have a chance”Leitão reacted to the news from SOL, which gives the names.

At this stage, Chega himself is trying to have two names elected to the Ratton Palace, which, DN found, is not accepted by the PSD bench, which considers that the party with the most votes must be the most represented. Furthermore, there are social democrats who tried to maintain a certain representation of the central bloc, that is, the PSD nominated two names and brought in one from the PS.

The topic is discussed among runners, in addition to defining the names nominated for state councilors. António José Seguro tried to speed up the process in meetings with the parties. The President of the Republic is concerned about the delay and dissatisfied with the Public Prosecutor’s Office not yet having a replacement since Maria Lúcia Amaral was appointed minister. There will be a new schedule for Wednesday’s leadership conference.
