Salina, NY – Deputies have released the name of the man accused of stabbing a man to death that sparked a 13-hour standoff in Salina.
Raoof Mustafa, 47, fatally stabbed Taiwo Ogunsola, 38, of Salina Friday afternoon, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Saturday afternoon.
Mustafa was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree arson and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Deputies said during the standoff, Mustafa lit several fires inside 543 Sunflower Dr., where he barricaded himself until a SWAT team broke in to take him into custody early Saturday. It was found in the attic of the house.
According to voter registration records, the victim lived at 541 Sunflower Dr., which is part of a duplex with 543 Sunflower Dr.
Mustafa may have lived at 543 Sunflower Dr. or was visiting someone he knew there, but according to Deputy Doug Roser, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, the answer is not entirely clear yet.
Police are still investigating what exactly led to the stabbing and whether the victim and the suspect knew each other, Roser said.
The standoff began around 3:41 p.m. Friday when deputies were called to the scene and found Ogunsola with stab wounds to the neck, they said.
Ogunsola was taken to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition before he died Friday night, deputies said.
Mustafa suffered burns and smoke inhalation during the standoff, Roser said. He was taken to the hospital on Saturday morning.
On Saturday night, Mustafa was taken to the Onondaga County Justice Center, Roser said.
