Benfica defeated Torreense (2-0), with two goals from Diana Silva, in the big game of the 15th round of the BPI League, and could become six-time national women’s football champions in the next round.
This Easter Sunday, April 5th, at the Benfica Campus, in Seixal, the former Sporting player scored in the 15th and 85th minutes and almost ended the former team’s hopes of stealing the title from their Second Circular rival.
Since investing in women’s football, Benfica has not known what it’s like to end the season without the title: They became champions of the II Division in their debut, in 2018/19, in 2019/20 they were leading, but the championship was interrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic and did not finish. He then moved up to the first tier and was national champion five times in a row, in 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25
Now, after beating Torreense, the team remains undefeated, with 12 wins and three draws in 15 games, for a total of 39 points, eight more than second-placed Sporting, who on Saturday beat Sp. Braga. Torreense is third, with 25 points.
And it only depends on her to become champion in the next round, the 16th and third to last, which will happen if she wins in Braga, in a game scheduled for April 25th. And they can also celebrate if Sporting fails to beat Rio Ave at home in the same round.
