The government diploma that amends the Nationality Law will be discussed again in the Portuguese parliament on April 1st.
The changes already approved affect children of foreigners born in Portugal, who will no longer automatically have the right to nationality, and increase the period of residence in the country required for Brazilians to apply for citizenship, from 5 to 7 years.
On April 1st, parliamentarians will only do one bureaucratic step, which is to formalize the discussion of then-president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s veto. The former president, who left office at the beginning of this month, sent the proposal for the STF to review some points. The court, in turn, ruled some measures as unconstitutional.
With the discussion on the 1st, the Government will be able to present the revised text for voting. Once approved by the deputies, it will be the new president, Antonio José Seguro, who will assess the diploma.
