What changed in traffic regulations?
The trigger was a tragic accident that occurred on the Concordia bridge in Iztapalapa, where there were multiple injuries and fatalities. In response, the Mexican government decided to update the traffic regulations with stricter measures for freight transport drivers.
Among these measures is the creation of the E12 driver’s license, which has generated confusion in many drivers who do not understand whether they should apply for it or not.
What is the E12 license?
The E12 driver’s license is a new exclusive modality for transporters who handle dangerous substances, such as toxic, corrosive or flammable materials. This license will only be granted to those who have completed a specialized course in handling dangerous substances, endorsed by the corresponding authorities.

Do I need this license?
- If you transport dangerous substances: yes, you need it.
- If you don’t work in specialized transportation: no, you don’t have to worry about this license.
