President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo inaugurated a new headquarters of the Rosario Castellanos National University (URC) in the municipality of Chalcoan educational project that seeks to expand vocational training opportunities for young people in the State of Mexico, especially in the eastern part of the entity.

Sheinbaum recognized that the country needs more than 600,000 spaces for university students, which is why his Government has proposed expanding higher educational coverage with the creation of more institutions.

Accompanied by Governor Delfina Gómez; the Secretary of Sciences, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez; the general secretary of the URC, Antonio Méndez, and Gabriel Guerra Castellanos, son of the Chiapas writer who gives its name to the institution, the president highlighted that the creation of new public universities responds to a historical debt with Mexican youth.

“For many years the construction of university spaces was abandoned. In Mexico there are nearly a million places missing to guarantee that at least 55% of young people can pursue higher education. That is why we are building public and free universities: because all young Mexicans have the right to study,” he stated.

During his speech, Governor Delfina Gómez recognized President Claudia Sheinbaum for her commitment to public education and for promoting projects that strengthen social well-being throughout the country.

Sheinbaum explained that this campus is part of the Eastern Comprehensive Program of the State of Mexico, a region that, he said, had been historically marginalized in terms of education and infrastructure.

“This is part of the right to education and the comprehensive program of the East of the State of Mexico; that is why we are here in Chalco,” he said.

The president stressed that her administration’s goal is to create 350,000 additional spaces in public universities by strengthening the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the National Technology of Mexico and the Rosario Castellanos Universities themselveswhich emerged as an innovative model to combine academic, scientific and social training with an inclusion perspective.

The new headquarters of the URC Chalco has capacity for a thousand students, however, more than five thousand young people applied for admission.

To meet demand, the institution has enabled online and hybrid options, while expanding spaces and educational infrastructure.
