Retail sales increased by 2% in January in the euro area and 2.3% in the European Union, according to Eurostat this Thursday, 5th.
In the monthly comparison (with December), sales volume fell 0.1% in the euro zone and increased 0.1% in the 27 Member States as a whole. Portugal stood out with the third biggest monthly increase, of 2%.
In the same comparison (January 2026 compared to January 2025), Portugal recorded growth of 4.7%. Among the Member States with available data, the biggest year-on-year increases were observed in Luxembourg (+24.7%), Lithuania (+9.3%) and Estonia (+8.7%), while Slovakia (-3.1%) and Slovenia (-1.5%) recorded the only declines.
When analyzing the monthly variation by country, the biggest increases in volume were in Estonia (+4.4%), Latvia (+2.8%) and Portugal (+2.0%). The steepest falls were recorded in Slovakia (‑3.5%), Slovenia (‑1.9%) and Croatia (‑1.3%).
