The Interprofessional Organization of the Pork Industry (Filporc) suspended the animal welfare certification of organizations that were affected by the bad weather.
The process will only be resumed after a new visit from the control body.
“Taking into account the calamity situation declared by the Government of Portugal for the entire country following the storms Kristin, Leonardo and Marta, Filporc decided to suspend the certification of the farms that reported having been affected,” he said in a statement.
According to the federation, the process will only be resumed when the control body validates the conditions of the facilities where the animals are housed.
Filporc’s food welfare certification is a voluntary opt-in process, in which candidates “commit to going further than the already demanding legal framework prevailing in the European Union”.
Members, subject to audits, are also obliged to communicate to Filporc any anomalous situation in the course of their daily activity.
Portugal was hit by a train of storms, between the end of January and the beginning of February, which left a trail of destruction, especially in the Central region of the country.
In the wake of this climate phenomenon, pig farmers argued that they were experiencing the biggest crisis of all time, with half of national farms affected and losses amounting to millions of euros.
