DeWitt, NY – A fire inside a commercial building damaged a business in DeWitt on Sunday, officials said.
A fire started inside a business at 3603 James Street in DeWitt around 10:37 a.m., according to DeWitt Fire Chief Jason Green. Green said the fire was contained to one room and was extinguished within four to five minutes of firefighters arriving on the scene.
Firefighters were called to the scene after a property representative conducting a routine inspection noticed light smoke coming from the building. Green said minimal smoke was visible until firefighters entered the building where they saw heavier smoke and fire.
Green said smoke and heat damage extended to other parts of the unit, but there was no damage to neighboring businesses in the small plaza.
Green said there is no indication the building was equipped with an alarm system, although that remains part of the investigation. Green said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no one was injured, he said.
Crews were on scene finishing cleanup and assisting fire investigators, he said.
