First Brazilian Chef to Win a Michelin Star in Portugal

A chef Angélica Salvador from Paraná made history on Tuesday night (10), by becoming the first Brazilian immigrant awarded a Michelin star in Portugal. In a ceremony held at the Savoy Palace, in Funchal, Madeira Island, the chef was awarded what is considered the highlight of her career in gastronomy for her work running the Indifferent restaurant, in Porto.

“It’s a very big emotion. In short, when the Indifferent project was thought of, we thought a lot about it, the pretext of the name, thinking exactly about this part of being an immigrant having a project, a woman having a project in the indifferent. For me, being Brazilian means sharing with my fellow countrymen and beyond, that everything is possible. We can’t stop believing in our dreams”, she declared in an interview with DN/DN Brasil after the ceremony.

The Brazilian’s conquest was also historic for women in Portugal. In addition to being the first immigrant from Brazil to achieve the distinction, she also became only the third woman in the country to be awarded a star – last year Marlene Vieira and Rita Magro achieved the feat.

Born in Engenheiro Beltrão (PR), Angélica Salvador has lived in Portugal for a long time. She arrived in the country in 2005, where she began to build a solid career in the hospitality sector, working at establishments such as Sheraton Algarve and Tróia Design Hotel.

At InDiferente, a project she has led since 2018, she seeks to combine Brazilian roots with contemporary Portuguese cuisine, work that now places her among the best chefs in the country. Asked about what she still brings here from Brazil, she remembers the seasoning – but not only that.

“It’s a little bit of garlic in Brazil, the stew we talk about, but above all, never stop forgetting our origins. My family supports me, I’ve been outside my country for 20 years, but regardless of being in Portugal, which is the country I chose to live in, I don’t think we have to stop being who we are”, he concluded.

In addition to the figure of Angélica Salvador, Brazil shone at the Michelin Gala also through other gastronomic personalities in Portugal, such as Nelson Soares, from Rio who saw his Sult Cascais distinguished in the Recommended category.
