Ford’s decision to stop car production at its Saarlouis plant in Saarland marks a significant turning point for the region. The final vehicle, a Ford Focus, will roll off the assembly line on November 21, 2023, although the official closure will not occur until November 30. This decision has far-reaching implications for the local economy and the workers who have been part of the Ford family for decades.

Since the factory opened in January 1970, over 15.6 million vehicles have been produced in Saarlouis. The most famous models include the Ford Escort and the Ford Focus, which dominated the streets of Europe for years. What is particularly noteworthy is that Ford’s first series-produced electric car in Europe, the Focus Electric, was manufactured in Saarlouis between 2013 and 2018.

The closure of the plant is the result of a strategic decision by Ford to relocate production of the Focus model to Valencia, Spain, where a new electric car platform is to be built. This decision was made in June 2022 and hit the 4,600 employees at the time hard. A subsequent search for investors to take over the plant was unsuccessful, which ultimately led to its closure.

However, there is hope for the future of the site. The pharmaceutical service provider Vetter plans to build a new factory on the site that will provide space for 2,000 employees. This development could bring an economic boost to the region and create new jobs. Nevertheless, the closure of the Ford plant remains an emotional and economic turning point for Saarland.
